Solar Drying of Agricultural Products is an application of enclosed solar drying for reducing excess moisture from suitable farm produce before storage, processing or value addition. It can be applied to selected fruits, vegetables, grains, millets, pulses, oilseeds, spices, herbs, seeds, medicinal plants and other agricultural commodities according to their individual drying requirements. Agricultural products vary widely in moisture content, physical structure, size, density and sensitivity to temperature. Therefore, solar drying should be planned according to the specific commodity rather than using one fixed drying time or temperature for all produce. An enclosed solar drying system uses captured solar thermal energy together with controlled air movement through the drying chamber. Depending on system configuration, solar-powered DC fans may support forced airflow and moisture removal. The enclosed environment also helps reduce direct exposure of the produce to dust, insects, birds and uncontrolled outdoor contact compared with conventional open-sun drying. Drying performance depends on initial and target moisture, commodity preparation, cutting or slicing where applicable, layer thickness, tray loading, airflow, temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and local weather conditions. Solar drying of agricultural products can support farmers, FPOs, SHGs, cooperatives, food processors and agro-enterprises seeking better moisture management, post-harvest handling and agricultural value-addition opportunities.
