Solar Drying of Millets & Grains is an enclosed solar drying application for controlled moisture reduction in suitable cereal and grain commodities such as paddy, wheat, maize, bajra, jowar, ragi and other millets and grains. Proper moisture management after harvesting can support safer storage, handling, milling and further processing. Millets and grains differ in kernel size, husk condition, bulk density, initial moisture and intended end use. Therefore, drying requirements should be determined for the specific commodity and storage or processing objective rather than applying one fixed drying time or temperature to all grains. An enclosed solar drying system uses captured solar thermal energy together with managed airflow through the drying chamber. Depending on system design, solar-powered DC fans may assist forced air circulation and moisture removal. The protected drying environment can also reduce direct exposure to dust, insects, birds and uncontrolled outdoor contact compared with conventional open-sun drying. Actual drying performance depends on initial moisture, required final moisture, grain type, layer depth, loading density, airflow, temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and local weather conditions. Drying should be monitored carefully where grain quality, milling performance or seed viability is important. Solar drying of millets and grains can support farmers, FPOs, cooperatives, grain processors, seed handlers and agro-processing enterprises involved in post-harvest moisture management and agricultural value addition.
