Description

Solar Drying of Forest Produce is an enclosed solar drying application for controlled moisture reduction in suitable non-timber forest produce and forest-based raw materials before storage, processing or value addition. Applications may include selected medicinal leaves, flowers, herbs, fruits, seeds, gums, roots and other suitable forest produce according to their individual drying requirements.

Forest produce can differ significantly in moisture content, physical structure, thickness, density, temperature sensitivity and intended end use. Therefore, drying conditions should be selected for the specific material rather than applying one fixed temperature or drying time to every forest commodity.

An enclosed solar drying system uses solar thermal energy together with managed airflow to remove moisture from the loaded material. Depending on system design, solar-powered DC fans may support forced air circulation, while the enclosed chamber helps reduce direct exposure to dust, insects, birds and uncontrolled outdoor contact.

Actual drying performance depends on the type of forest produce, initial and target moisture, cleaning or preparation, cutting or slicing where applicable, layer thickness, tray loading, airflow, temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and local weather conditions. Temperature-sensitive medicinal or aromatic materials may require additional care during drying.

Solar drying can support forest-produce collectors, tribal enterprises, SHGs, FPOs, cooperatives, herbal processors and rural value-addition units seeking improved post-harvest handling and moisture management before packaging, storage or further processing.
