Solar Drying of Organic Farm Produce is an enclosed solar drying application for controlled moisture reduction in suitable organically grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, grains, pulses, seeds, medicinal plants and other farm produce before storage, processing or value addition.

Organic produce requires careful post-harvest handling because product identity, cleanliness and process control can be important throughout the value chain. Compared with direct open-sun drying, an enclosed solar drying system provides a protected drying environment that can help reduce direct exposure to dust, insects, birds and uncontrolled outdoor contact.

Solar thermal energy is used to heat the drying air, while managed airflow removes moisture released from the product. Depending on system design, solar-powered DC fans may support forced air circulation through the drying chamber.

Different organic commodities have different moisture content, structure, density and temperature sensitivity. Therefore, one fixed drying time or temperature should not be applied to all produce. Actual drying performance depends on commodity type, initial and target moisture, preparation, slice thickness, layer depth, tray loading, airflow, temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and local weather.

Solar drying can support organic farmers, FPOs, SHGs, cooperatives, certified organic processors and value-addition enterprises. Where organic certification applies, drying, handling, cleaning, segregation, storage and documentation should also follow the applicable certification and processing requirements.
