Solar Drying of Plantation Crops
Description
Solar Drying of Plantation Crops is an enclosed solar drying application for controlled moisture reduction in suitable plantation-based agricultural produce such as coconut, arecanut, coffee, cocoa, black pepper, cardamom and other compatible crops before storage, processing or value addition.
Plantation crops differ significantly in structure, moisture content, oil or volatile-compound content, physical size and final processing requirement. Coconut material, coffee produce, cocoa, pepper and cardamom therefore should not be dried using one universal temperature, loading pattern or drying duration.
An enclosed solar drying system uses solar thermal energy together with managed airflow through the drying chamber. Depending on system design, solar-powered DC fans may support forced air circulation, while the enclosed environment helps reduce direct exposure to dust, insects, birds and uncontrolled outdoor contact.
Actual drying performance depends on the commodity, initial and target moisture, preparation method, whole or processed condition, layer thickness, tray loading, airflow, temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and local weather. Aromatic or quality-sensitive plantation crops may require additional control where colour, aroma, flavour or processing quality is important.
Solar drying can support plantation growers, FPOs, cooperatives, spice processors, coffee and cocoa processors, coconut-based enterprises and agro-processing businesses seeking improved post-harvest moisture management and value addition.
