Description

Solar Drying of Horticultural Crops is an enclosed solar drying application for controlled moisture reduction in suitable fruits, vegetables, flowers, herbs, spices and other horticultural produce before storage, processing or value addition. It can support growers and processors handling seasonal, perishable or market-oriented crops where moisture reduction forms part of the post-harvest process.

Horticultural commodities differ widely in moisture content, tissue structure, size, surface area, sugar or oil content and sensitivity to temperature. Fruits may require slicing, vegetables may need specific preparation, leafy herbs require shallow loading, while flowers and spices can demand greater care where colour, aroma or other quality attributes are important.

An enclosed solar drying system uses solar thermal energy with managed airflow through the drying chamber. Depending on system design, solar-powered DC fans may support forced air circulation while the enclosed environment helps reduce direct exposure to dust, insects, birds and uncontrolled outdoor contact.

Actual drying performance depends on commodity type, initial and target moisture, preparation, slice thickness, layer depth, tray loading, airflow, temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and local weather. Therefore, one fixed drying time or temperature should not be applied across all horticultural crops.

Solar drying can support horticulture growers, FPOs, SHGs, cooperatives, food processors and value-addition enterprises seeking better post-harvest moisture management and diversified processing opportunities.
