Solar Drying of Medicinal Plants
Description
Solar Drying of Medicinal Plants is an enclosed solar drying application for controlled moisture reduction in suitable medicinal and herbal raw materials such as moringa leaves, neem leaves, tulsi, ashwagandha, aloe vera, turmeric, ginger and other plant-based materials used for herbal, Ayurvedic and value-added processing.
Medicinal plants can include leaves, roots, rhizomes, stems, flowers and other plant parts, each with different moisture levels, structure and sensitivity to drying conditions. Therefore, drying should be planned according to the specific plant material and its intended end use rather than applying one fixed temperature or drying time.
An enclosed solar drying system uses solar thermal energy with managed airflow through the drying chamber. Depending on system design, solar-powered DC fans may support forced air circulation and moisture removal. The enclosed environment can also reduce direct exposure to dust, insects, birds and uncontrolled outdoor contact compared with open-sun drying.
Drying performance depends on the plant part, initial and target moisture, preparation method, cutting or slicing, layer thickness, tray loading, airflow, temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and local weather. Temperature-sensitive medicinal materials may require additional care to avoid unnecessary quality deterioration.
Solar drying can support medicinal plant growers, herbal processors, Ayurvedic raw-material suppliers, FPOs, SHGs and agro-processing enterprises involved in post-harvest handling and value addition.
