Description

Solar Drying of Oilseeds is an application of enclosed solar drying for controlled moisture reduction in oil-bearing agricultural commodities such as groundnut or peanut, sesame, mustard, soybean, sunflower and other suitable oilseeds. Oilseeds may require drying after harvesting, cleaning or processing to reach an appropriate moisture condition for storage, handling, seed use or further processing.

Unlike open-sun drying, an enclosed solar drying system provides a protected drying environment with managed air movement around the loaded material. Depending on dryer design, solar-powered DC fans may be used to support forced airflow and moisture removal while reducing direct exposure to dust, insects, birds and uncontrolled outdoor contact.

Oilseeds should not be treated as one uniform drying material. Groundnut, sesame, mustard, soybean and sunflower differ in seed size, structure, oil content, initial moisture, bulk density and intended end use. Drying requirements should therefore be determined for the specific commodity and processing objective.

Actual drying performance depends on initial moisture, required final moisture, seed or pod condition, layer depth, loading density, airflow, temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and local weather. Where oilseeds are intended for planting, drying conditions should also be selected with seed viability and germination requirements in mind.

Solar drying of oilseeds can support farmers, FPOs, SHGs, seed processors, oilseed processors and agricultural value-addition enterprises seeking a more controlled method of moisture management before storage or downstream processing.
